Welcome to the Radical Kitchen!  I am an organic farmer, herbalist, permaculture and food educator, waldorf homeschooler, and former milkmaid. For eleven years, we owned our own CSA business and full-diet farm, Radical Root Farm, where we grew a lot of food for people, as well our own family, on rented land in Illinois. When our lease changed, our rental situation no longer became sustainable for our farm and our business to survive. We made the sad decision to leave everything we had built on that land, including wonderful customers and relationships. With the little money we had (after selling off some of our equipment), we decided to make it an adventure; we bought an old, run-down Airstream bus, converted it to an off-grid tiny home complete with solar panels and a composting toilet, and set out to see the United States. We chose states that we could WWOOF in (volunteer as organic farm workers in exchange for food and a place to park), along with seeing plenty of beautiful places. We volunteered on some farms, worked for pay on others, but also had plenty of days camped in national and state parks. After completely overdosing on s’mores, We now live in upstate New York, where we are currently saving up to buy our biodynamic farmstead, where we will again raise small livestock for meat and eggs, organic vegetables, medicinal herbs, milking goats, and bees.   Alex, my husband, now works as the farm production manager for Fishkill Farms.   Health and the environment are very important to us.  Real, rustic farm food is central to our lives.  We grow, cook, ferment, can, and are always learning and experimenting in the kitchen.  In addition to our many food adventures, we also hike in the mountains, search for waterfalls, catch frogs, forage wild foods and wild berries, swim in swimming holes, and ride our bicycles in the summer.   In the winter we make stews, drink tea, sled, hike in the snow, snowshoe in the mountains, and sleep alittle more.  We practice waldorf-inspired homeschooling because it fits in well with our family. I have nourished my family with lots of different remedies and ingredients, and I hope you can find some advice here that will help you nourish yours, too!
